The Beauty Ingredient to Avoid: Nourish is Phthalate-free – Prevention Magazine

When you spritz and slather on products, what are you applying? Some formulas have phthalates, a class of chemicals used as solvents or plasticizers that are linked to health issues. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and diethyl phthalate (DEP) have been linked to hormonal changes in men, says Shanna H., Swan, PhD, a professor in the department of preventive medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. (Research in links between phthalates and health issues in women is under way.) Companies aren’t required to list phthalates on some labels, but DEP and DBP can be in perfumes, hair sprays, and products with synthetic fragrance. Items applied daily (like lotion) are especially problematic because the more you use, the greater your exposure, says Dr. Swan. The safest bet: pick items, like these, labeled phthalate free.

1. Fragrance – Honoré Des Prés Eau de Toilette

2. Scented lotion: Nourish Organic Body Butter

3. Hair Spray: Alterna Bamboo Style Ultra Hold Hair Spray
